Writing from first or third person?

I suppose since most classics are written in third, some assume that third is better. I prefer third; I like the writing better--it often seems more lyrical while still being in prose. But third is not better than first; first is not amateur. It's what fits the story. Anyone who says otherwise is the amateur reader/writer. Likewise, few stories are written in second and it's a hard POV to write well, but that does not make it inferior to third and first.
