What were the causes: Young farm girls and women flock to lowell and other mill towns?

There was lots of work for them in the mills. The prospect of working in a mill and earning independent wages was attractive to many working class girls whose other alternatives were most likely to be slaving away on the family farm, or going into domestic service.
